In the last days of 2020, taking advantage of the relatively high water levels, we set off from the marina in Jadwisin on the Zegrze Reservoir to conquer the Bug. The river is officially considered navigable, but due to the low water levels, even kayaks are often unable to navigate some sections. Observers on the shore emphasized that they had not seen a vessel as large as our Ania on the Bug for years.
Cruising upstream, we pass Wyszków, Kamieńczyk, Brańszczyk, Brok, Małkinia, Nur... The Bug becomes narrower, meanders more strongly, fairy-tale landscapes... On the banks, historic cities - Drohiczyn and Mielnik and the last town before the border, Niemirów. Then, for 55 km, we sail along the border Bug, where the journey takes place with the consent of the Border Guard. We must be careful not to enter the Belarusian side. The end of the journey in Kuzawka, a few kilometres before Terespol. It is not allowed to go any further. The next dozen or so kilometres of the river are completely closed to navigation due to border reasons. Therefore, in the season, kayaks are transported on trailers. Winter approaching from the east forces us to return quickly. We reach the Zegrze Reservoir literally at the last moment. The next day, the Reservoir is already covered in ice.
A few months after our cruise, the border with Belarus was closed and cruising on the 55 km section between Niemirów and Kuzawka Terespolska is completely prohibited. Unfortunately, it looks like the situation will not change anytime soon.
